Four a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix. What would cause a tranny to slip after sitting for a while.?

The transmission is a 4T60E four speed auto. the tranny will slip if you just start the car and drive away but if you let the car sit and idle for about two minutes it will work fine. The sliping feals like if your driving a manual car like when you dont let your foot all the way off the cluch and try to drive away. also I hear a sound like a tranny pump or some thing. I droped the pan and took a look at the fluid and their was no metal in the tranny oil and ther was nothing inside the filter (tore it apart) and their wasn't anything on the magnet. When I was draning the tranny fluid I got 2 1/2 gallons out this means that the fluid is leaking past the torqueconverter or the pump, because in my cars manual it says that the tranny takes 2 gallons and converter takes 2 quarts, isn't the fliud in the converter soposed to stay inside of it. So anyway I put in a new filter and new tranny oil and it still does it. Any ideas as to what it may be?

the 4T60E has no band adjustment, your problem is likely the torque converter. There may be a plug in the torque converter, if there is, pull it and check the fluid for metal particles, they don't always make it to the filter or pan.

The pump seals are leaking. If it warms up a bit they seal enough to make enough pressure to engage the clutch's. Sometimes seal conditioner will help, gm makes a good one, however usually it will get worse and you will be slipping more and more until it needs rebuilt.

(1) Torque converter may be bad (think you already suspect this).

(2) Bands on the transmission may need adjusting.

IF IT ONLY DOES IT, AT THE FIRST. AND OK AFTER THAT.

CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL. IF IT'S LOW.....IT WILL SLIP, IT STOPS SLIPPING AFTER IT WARMS UP, BECAUSE HOT FLUID EXPANDS.

IF IT WAS A TORQUE CONVERTOR, IT WOULD SLIP ALL THE TIME, NOT JUST AT THE BEGINING.

CHECK YOUR SCREEN, IT MAY BE DIRTY.

torque converter is going, you should have the entire trans rebuilt, and make sure you flush the lines and cooler.
