The name was inspired from a Ferrari 250 GTO race car. GTO is an acronym for Gran Turismo Omologato. GMs use of the moniker on a Pontica drew protest from Ferrari purists who considered it a sacrilege to put this name on a Pontiac.



Now some Pontiac purists posted blogs & blogs protesting the use of the moniker on the 2004 Pontiac "Holden" GTO ...



For reference "homologated" is a term used when a sufficient number of a particular car have been built to qualify them for racing as a stock-production vehicle.
