I have a 1987 Pontiac fiero that I want to put a 2006 gto 6.0 ls2 engine in but since the fiero are mid engine cars I can't use the transmission that goes with it do any of you know which transmission I would have to use to make it work? Would the g6 or g8 trans work with the gto because both the engine and transmission go in the back

Transmission is your first problem. Most of the LS engines were / are for RWD. The RWD and FWD transmission mounts are different. Second issue is the RWD engines are designed to fit longitudinally where for the most part there are not great issues with the overall length. The FWD engines are for the most part are designed to be mounted transversely (sideways) so there are design aspects that make them fit better that way since you are stuck between the strut towers. There are exceptions, there were a few FWD cars made with LS engines but they were not that common so you can't usually find them in junkyards or real chap on craigs list. They also made a special RWD transmission to use the FWD motors in the RWD cars.

The easiest swap is a supercharged 3800. Cadillac comes up a lot too because they used transverse V8's and generally had pretty decent power and strong transmissions. You can pick up Cadillac's pretty cheap to donate you all the parts you need. Cadillac (and Oldsmobile) also made FWD cars that did not have transverse engines. Those were the 66-78 Toronado and the 67-78 Eldorado. Those had big old school engines 425 to 500 cubic inches. 79-85 they downsized things a bit and ran 5.0 ish engines. I have seen several Fiero's with those sorts of swaps and they actually look to me to fit better than trying to fit a chev small block sideways. The Olds and Cadillac's used a different transmission mount than the Chev engines plus they had a special oil pan and mounts to accommodate the FWD.

I swapped a V8 Northstar from a Cadillac into a Fiero Gt. At that time, they had adapters to fit right up to the trans. The Cadillac was front wheel drive, so made a great donor for how the Fiero engine/trans were positioned. A GM 6-speed automatic - the 6T75, is what you need for the LS2 to work in there. Have fun and be safe!

WAY too much information required for a simple Q&A forum like this one. There have been many different engine swaps done on Pontiac Fierro cars in the past. I suggest you use Google or Bing to find information on the best way to do it.

I would ask the same question on one of the Fiero forums where people can have a conversation with you about the details and where people have done it.
